Collection Abuse

Though student loans are treated differently when it comes to some things like bankruptcy, the same federal and state rules regulate how collectors may treat you when trying to collect on a loan. See Collections Defense: Your Rights for more information about what collectors are allowed and not allowed to do.

Even if you have federal loan, the person who is calling you may not be working for a government agency. When student loans go into default, private collection agencies are engaged, and their goal is to make the most money possible for their agency, not to steer you toward the solution that is best for you. At times they will even engage in deceptive or harassing practices which are unlawful under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. But you do not have to face debt collectors on your own. We can help educate you about your rights and your options when it comes to your student loan debt.
